Forty percent of employees worldwide report daily stress, and burnout costs employers thousands per person each year. Here is what the research says about the sleep, exercise, and recovery habits that measurably lower the risk.
Burnout is often described in vague terms — feeling "fried," "running on empty." The data behind it is anything but vague. According to Gallup's 2025 State of the Global Workplace report, global employee engagement fell from 23% to 21% in 2024 — only the second decline in twelve years — costing the world economy an estimated $438 billion in lost productivity. The American Psychological Association's 2024 Work in America survey found that 43% of workers typically feel tense or stressed during their workday — a figure that climbs to 61% among workers reporting low psychological safety.
Globally, Gallup's 2025 report flagged managers as the fastest-deteriorating group: manager engagement fell from 30% to 27% in a single year, and Gallup estimates that a fully engaged global workforce would add roughly $9.6 trillion in productivity — about 9% of global GDP.
What burnout costs an employer, per person
A 2025 modeling study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, led by researchers at Johns Hopkins, put annual per-employee price tags on disengagement and burnout — and found the cost rises sharply with seniority. Notably, most of the loss comes from presenteeism (showing up but underperforming), not absence.

Sleep is the strongest single lever

A prospective study published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology in 2012 followed 388 working adults for two years and identified who went on to develop clinical burnout severe enough to require treatment. After adjusting for work demands and other factors, the main risk factor was sleeping less than 6 hours a night. Ruminating about work during off-hours and high work demands also predicted later burnout — suggesting a chain where work stress disrupts sleep, and short sleep then erodes the capacity to cope.
The relationship also runs both ways: longitudinal research published in Stress and Health in 2023 found that burnout and insomnia feed each other over time, which is exactly why early intervention on sleep pays off. Pulling the research together into a workday-shaped protocol:
- Anchor sleep first. Fixed wake time, 7–9 hour window, no work email in the last hour before bed. Below 6 hours is the documented danger zone.
- Schedule 3 exercise sessions per week. Cardio or resistance both work; pick the one you'll actually repeat. Four weeks is long enough to feel a difference.
- Take real breaks, not screen swaps. The WHO's definition hinges on stress that "has not been successfully managed" — recovery windows during the day are part of managing it. Step away from the desk at lunch; get outside when you can.
