The average adult internet user now spends 6 hours and 38 minutes online every day, according to GWI research published in DataReportal's Digital 2025 report — roughly 40 percent of waking life. Over the same two decades that screens absorbed that much of our time, our ability to hold attention on them collapsed: University of California, Irvine researcher Gloria Mark's studies found that the average time spent on a single screen before switching fell from about 2.5 minutes in 2004 to 47 seconds in her most recent data. Screen fatigue isn't a vague modern complaint. How much screen time are we actually logging

The global picture is remarkably consistent: DataReportal's Digital 2026 report counts 6.04 billion internet users — 73.2 percent of humanity — and its 2025 edition put average daily online time at 6 hours 38 minutes for working-age internet users. In the United States, Reviews.org's 2025 survey found Americans spend about 5 hours and 1 minute per day on their smartphones alone, which works out to roughly 83 full days per year on the phone.

The checking behavior matters as much as the total. The same 2025 survey found Americans checked their phones around 205 times per day — once every five waking minutes — with 85 percent reaching for the phone within ten minutes of waking. The 2026 follow-up showed a modest improvement to 186 daily checks, a hopeful sign that awareness campaigns and built-in screen-time tools are nudging behavior, but still an extraordinary frequency of self-interruption.

Younger users face an even denser stream. Common Sense Media's 2023 "Constant Companion" study, which installed tracking software on the phones of roughly 200 adolescents, recorded a median of 237 notifications per day — with some participants receiving nearly 5,000 in a single 24-hour period, and about a quarter of all notifications arriving during the school day.

What screens do to your eyes — and the 20-second fix that actually works

Digital eye strain (clinicians call it computer vision syndrome) is the most immediate, physical form of screen fatigue: dryness, blurred vision, headaches, and neck and shoulder pain. An American Optometric Association survey found that 58 percent of adults have experienced digital eye strain or vision problems as a direct result of computer use. Part of the mechanism is simple: people blink less, and less completely, when staring at a fixed focal distance.

The standard advice — the 20-20-20 rule, meaning every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds — floated around for years without direct evidence. That changed when researchers at Aston University, working with the University of Valencia, ran the first proper validation, published in 2022. They installed software that detected continuous screen viewing and would not dismiss its reminder until the user actually looked away at a distant target. After two weeks, participants showed a marked decrease in dryness, sensitivity, and discomfort — and study lead Professor James Wolffsohn noted the access-controlled software confirmed participants genuinely performed the breaks.

The practical translation: don't rely on willpower to remember the rule. Use a break-reminder app or a repeating 20-minute timer, and make the break real — eyes off the screen, focused on something across the room or out a window, for a slow count of 20.

Screen fatigue isn't only ocular. Gloria Mark's two decades of workplace research at UC Irvine quantified what fragmentation costs. Her early observational studies found office workers were interrupted roughly every 11 minutes, and that after a significant interruption it took an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to fully return to the original task. Strikingly, her research also found that about 44 percent of interruptions are self-initiated — we break our own focus, unprompted, almost as often as our devices do.

Two habits target this directly:

  1. Batch notifications instead of receiving them live. Turn off all non-human alerts (promotions, badges, "someone you follow posted"), and check messages at set intervals — for example, at the top of each hour — rather than on arrival.
  2. Work in protected blocks. Given the ~23-minute refocus cost, even two or three uninterrupted 45–90 minute blocks per day, with the phone in another room and do-not-disturb on, protects more deep work than a whole day of fragmented effort.

Screens and sleep: the 59% problem

A 2025 Norwegian study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry examined screen use in bed among nearly 40,000 university students and found that each additional hour of in-bed screen time was associated with a 59 percent higher risk of insomnia and 24 fewer minutes of sleep per night. Notably, the activity didn't much matter — social media was no more disruptive than streaming or reading on a device — suggesting the issue is time displacement and stimulation, not any single app.

Blue light plays a role too, though a more nuanced one than headlines suggest. Research summarized by the Sleep Foundation shows evening blue-light exposure suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals sleep onset — and a 2024 study in Brain Communications found adults' melatonin levels were still significantly reduced at bedtime after evening smartphone use, while adolescents recovered within about 50 minutes.

The strongest evidence yet: the two-week reset

If you want proof that these changes pay off quickly, the best data comes from a 2025 randomized controlled trial published in PNAS Nexus by Castelo and colleagues. Researchers blocked mobile internet on participants' smartphones for two weeks — calls and texts still worked, and computers were untouched. The results were unusually large for a behavioral study: 91 percent of participants improved on at least one measured outcome, about 71 percent reported better mental health, and sustained-attention performance improved by an amount the authors compared to being ten years younger. The average improvement in depressive symptoms exceeded what multiple antidepressant medication trials report. Participants didn't simply sit with less stimulation — they spent more time socializing in person, exercising, and getting outdoors, and for the group that went first, the mental-health gains persisted at the four-week mark, two weeks after going back online.

You don't need to replicate the full intervention to borrow its mechanism. The trial's lesson is that the benefit came from removing constant access — not from heroic self-control. Screen fatigue built up gradually, and it unwinds the same way.
